No other feeling can be as fulfilling as getting your motorcycle license. Finally, you can ride out into the sun, enjoying the sights and the calming breeze right as you zoom through the scenic route.

There are millions and millions of motorcycle riders in the U.S., and if you want to be a part of the statistics, you may have to acquire your license first. There is no exemption; in every state, you must apply for it before you can even attempt to mount your flashy new motorcycle. Thankfully, it isn’t even too difficult to attain one.

If you happen to live in New Jersey, the process is relatively simple and would only require a couple of credentials and pre-requisites from you.

How Would I Be Eligible for a Motorcycle License in New Jersey?

You have a short checklist of all the eligibility requirements. Take note that this is mainly focused on the regulations of New Jersey, so what may or may not appear here will vary from the other states. With that in mind, you may begin the process if you happen to meet the following qualifications.

  • You must be at least 17 years old and above. If your age is below 18, then you may need the consent of your parent or legal guardian before you may even apply for the license.
  • You have to acquire your motorcycle permit.
  • You have to undergo and complete the NJ Motorcycle Safety Education Program (MSEP) Basic Rider Course. This is also required if you are below 18 years old.
  • You need to pass the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission’s motorcycle road test. Remember that completing the MSEP Basic Rider Course will waive the MVC’s motorcycle road test for motorcycle endorsement applicants.

While these may all look pretty simple, keep in mind that we haven’t even gotten to the actual training course yet. The third bullet point from above explicitly states that you will need to undergo and complete the system to be eligible for the license. A training course will teach you all of the basic things you need to know when riding a motorcycle.

Such skills are your “elementary level” lessons geared towards teaching drivers how to maneuver and behave during their trips, lessons that many rule-breakers, unfortunately, fail to even abide with. If you do not want to be like them, be sure to focus on the following beginner skills:

  • How to brake
  • How to turn and handle corners
  • How to deal with distracted drivers
  • How to avoid road hazards
  • How to share the road with others
  • How to handle emergencies on the road
  • How to find the safest route for riding and more

The Two Different Conditions When Applying for a Motorcycle License

Not every rule or policy fits all conditions, which is why the following variations are also present when applying for a motorcycle license.

  1. If You Already Have a Driver’s License

If you already have a license for driving a car, the process is made more accessible, as all you’d have to do is pass the motorcycle riding course and provide the other paperwork. There will no longer be any need for a permit.

  1. If You Are Applying for a Motorcycle License without Getting an Endorsement

You have to submit your motorcycle permit application and proof of residency, along with the identification documents. You will also go through a vision test and a written motorcycle knowledge test, which you have to pass to proceed with the training course.

Conclusion

Applying for a motorcycle license in New Jersey isn’t hard. So as long as you are determined to pass the training course and all the necessary paperwork, your path towards getting it will come to fruition.

Pay attention to all of the basics and prove that you have what it takes to ride your two-wheeled vehicle safely. By being a responsible trainee and a knowledgeable rider, you will acquire that well-needed license in no time.
